Cake Decorating: Fun With Fondant
FYI: I am making a DVD with Robin showing how to make all kinds of fondant cakes. If you’d like to know when it’s available, send me a message thru my channel page. Thanks to everybody! =) Fondant adds a special zest to cakes, pastries, and candies. See for yourself as a cake decorator creates fun with fondant. Hi, after you put the second layer of buttercream on and it has hardened-do you moisten it before putting on the fondant?
October 30th, 2009 at 2:40 am
It helps if you take something like a small paintbrush and a VERY minisucle amount of water mixed with a touch of sugar and spread lines along the back of the fondant (the side being put against the cake). Just like you were gluing paper together. Just make sure you don’t put a whole lot of water on the back of the fondant or it’ll make a bit of a mess. ^^;

You got it! It’s water, lightly applied by the small brush. =))

I am sorry, but I do not speak Spanish. Maybe someone can translate this for you.
After cake has cooled, she puts a thin layer of buttercream frosting on it. It is important that it is applied smoothly, for bumps may show or tear the fondant. She then puts it into the refrigerator so the frosting will harden (1+ hour). When cake is ready, start rolling out the fondantnot before, because it will dry out too quickly and wont bend & form to cake as easily.
Hope this answers your question! =)

Be sure the sides are as smooth as the top. At :27 seconds in, you see Robin using a long spatula to smooth the sides as she turns the cake. Have you tried that method? Then let it harden in the refrigerator. Let me know if that works for you.

November 8th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
did she use like straws to support her cake? i use plastic dowels and they are SO hard to cut and she used scissors! where do i find them???
November 8th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
They are like stiff plastic straws. She buys them at a specialty cake supply store. Maybe a craft store has them – or google for a cake decorating store in your area. Hope this helps! =)

What do you use on fondant seashells to make them look like pearls? Thank you
November 9th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I do that…my cake looks better and smoother than when I cover it with fondant. I do let it sit in the fridge over night to be sure its hard as well….
Do you think I use too much of cream on the sides?
